Receive email attachments without mimencode?

I would love to be able to use gateway.pl to receive attachments, but my hosted server does not have mimencode (or mmencode, etc). I do have access to uuencode and mutt. Does anybody know if it is possible to modify gateway.pl to work with either of these alternate programs? If so, any tips on getting that done?
